How much data do you actually use?
Most people pay for more data than they use. Here is what everyday things cost in data, how to read your own number, and the plan that fits it — from 1GB to unlimited.

What everyday things use
Anything on Wi-Fi uses no cellular data at all, so what matters is what you do away from it. These are typical figures, rounded — apps and quality settings move them up or down.
| Activity | Roughly, per hour | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Email and messaging (text only) | Under 10MB | Photos and videos you send add more. |
| Maps and turn-by-turn directions | 5–20MB | Offline maps downloaded on Wi-Fi use almost none on the road. |
| Music streaming | 40–150MB | Depends on the quality setting; downloaded playlists use none. |
| Web browsing | 50–150MB | Pages with autoplay video sit at the top. |
| Social media feeds | 100–800MB | Video-heavy feeds are the top of the range. |
| Video calls | 500MB–1.5GB | Audio-only calls use a small fraction. |
| Streaming video, standard definition | About 700MB | Most apps let you cap video quality on cellular. |
| Streaming video, HD | 1.5–3GB | One HD hour a day is 45GB or more a month. |
Find your own number
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service). The total covers the "current period," which runs from the last time the statistics were reset — reset them on your bill date to track one month.
- Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs or Internet → App data usage; on Samsung, Settings → Connections → Data usage. You can set the cycle to start on your bill date.
- Look at two or three months, not one, and choose the plan just above your usual month.
Pick the plan that fits
| Your usual month | Plan | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1GB — mostly on Wi-Fi | Mac Basic · 1GB | $15.00/mo, flat |
| 1–2GB | Mac Starter · 2GB | $19.99/mo |
| 2–10GB | Mac Essential · 10GB | $39.99/mo |
| 10–20GB | Mac Plus · 20GB | $49.99/mo |
| More than 20GB, or no home Wi-Fi | Mac Premium · unlimited | $69.99/mo |
Every plan has unlimited talk and text. Run out mid-month and nothing is added to your bill: the plan keeps working at reduced speed until the next cycle. Moving up a plan in My Account takes effect right away; extra lines are $5 less each and autopay takes $5 off every line, except on the flat-priced Mac Basic.
Questions
Is 1GB of data enough for a month?
For many people who are on Wi-Fi at home and at work, yes. 1GB covers messaging, email, maps and roughly 7 to 15 hours of light browsing in a month. It is not enough for video or daily social feeds away from Wi-Fi — for those, plan on 5GB to 10GB.
How much data does streaming video use on a phone?
About 700MB an hour in standard definition and 1.5 to 3GB an hour in HD. An hour of HD video a day adds up to 45GB or more a month, which is unlimited-plan territory. Setting apps to standard quality on cellular cuts that by more than half.
What happens if I use all my data?
Nothing is added to your bill. When the high-speed allowance is used up, the plan keeps working at reduced speed until the next monthly cycle — Mac Wireless plans never charge overage. If it keeps happening, move up a plan in My Account; moving up takes effect right away.
Does Wi-Fi count against my data?
No. Anything your phone does on Wi-Fi — at home, at work, at a café — uses no cellular data. Wi-Fi calling carries calls and texts over Wi-Fi too, and they count the same as any other call or text on your plan.
How much data does a video call use?
Roughly 500MB to 1.5GB an hour, depending on the app and the video quality; an audio-only call uses a small fraction of that. A weekly one-hour video call on cellular adds about 2 to 6GB to a month.
Every plan has unlimited talk and text, no contract and no credit check.
